The municipal court has the jurisdiction to hear and determine all cases arising under the Charter and Code of Ordinance of the City of Alamosa. Final decisions of the Court are subject to appeal to the District Court in the manner provided by law for appeals from a municipal court to the applicable district court.

Meet our Judge

Judge McDonald grew up in North Hollywood, California. He attended St.Charles Borromeo Elementary School and Crespi Carmelite High School. He received a political science degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Vermont Law School in May, 1996. Judge McDonald has practiced law in Colorado since November 1996. Judge McDonald was appointed the Gunnison Municipal Judge in May 2005 and continues to serve the City of Gunnison in that role. He served as adjunct lecturer at Western State Colorado University from August 2014 until May 2017. He was appointed as the Alamosa Municipal Judge in December 2017.

Judge McDonald was married in 1995 and has two daughters. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, reading, and golfing (poorly).

The municipal court handles citations issued by the Alamosa Police Department and Adams State Police Department for traffic, parking and ordinance violations. Alamosa Municipal Court is a court of record with court sessions held four times a month. 

Arraignments are held on the first Monday of every month (Tuesday if the Monday falls on a holiday); while all other hearings are held on the remaining three court dates of the month.

Citations that are issued by the Colorado State Patrol or Alamosa County Sheriff’s Department are handled by the Combined Court System (Alamosa County and District Court). To contact the combined courts, please call (719) 589-4996.

The City Prosecutor is the legal counsel representing the City of Alamosa in matters involving violations of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Alamosa. If you have received a summons for court for a traffic or misdemeanor violation, you may speak to the City Prosecutor regarding your case.
